Potential Squirrel Angles

Proposed Project

For my senior exhibit I would like to illustrate animals from north-eastern Wisconsin. Currently I’m specifically drawn to squirrels because they seem to do funny things around our campus. I think it would be really neat to capture them in these funny acts. To do this, over this summer I plan to take reference photos. I live in the area so this will be easy. I would love to get some neat close-up shots and turn them into funny illustrations. I hope to do one with a very large piece of food in its mouth, like a piece of bread or pizza. I might even make an illustration of the iconic albino squirrel. The illustrations would be mainly digital, but I plan on turning a few into screen prints or linocuts. The style of these would be more realistic than cartoons because I especially like how my above illustration of the butterfly turned out. As for installation in the gallery, I would like to frame ten 8″ x 8″ illustrations and potentially an 8″ x 10″ linocut and 11″ x 17″ screen print. Depending on what images I collect and how I decide to illustrate these images, these sizes and quantities may vary, but I hope to stay reasonably close to these estimates.

For this I wanted to choose a subject from nature because nature photography is what attracted me to creating my own art outside of school. I wanted to choose an animal as the subject rather than landscapes because I find it important to appreciate the other creatures living with us in the world. I’m hoping that after this exhibition, I could expand and cover more animals in different series.
